Q: What inspired you to start your own business?

A: My background is in Executive Leadership in education. Although I was excited about the success of my career, I struggled with the work-life balance and felt overwhelmed in my working mom journey. I noticed that I was not surrounding myself with people who understood my struggles of wanting to do well in my career, life, and motherhood. I needed a community. So as I began searching for a community that understood my juggles and struggles as a working mother and I couldn't find what I needed, I decided to create it. That is what MOTHERboard Society (MBS) is all about.

Q: What keeps you motivated day-to-day to keep working on your business?

A: What keeps me motivated is knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of working mothers. MOTHERboard Society is much bigger than I am. In fact, studies show that 92% of working mothers don't feel supported by their community. So knowing that MBS is that community we working mothers truly need is all the motivation I need to keep going!

Q: How have mentors and other entrepreneurs played a role in moving your business forward?

A: The feedback that I received from my Sky's the Limit mentor, Mia Long, Associate Manager at Accenture has been invaluable for refining our marketing approach at MOTHERboard Society. By helping me zero in on the specific audience we need to focus on, I've been able to develop a more targeted and effective marketing plan. I'm confident that this newfound clarity will expedite our journey toward acquiring 100 new customers in the upcoming marketing round. Targeting a specific audience not only amplifies our message but also increases the likelihood of conversions and customer retention, which are essential for the growth and sustainability of our initiative.

Q: What’s the #1 challenge you’ve faced, and how’d you overcome it?

A: My biggest challenge is work-life balance. I must thank my wonderful husband, Quinton, for all his support, for holding down the household financially, and for his motivation to keep me going. There have been many long nights, and on those nights, Quinton would cook dinner and keep the house together while I could not help. He is truly my best friend, and I truly could not have gotten this far in my business without the unwavering support of my husband and cheering me on throughout this process. I must say that my working-life balance is getting better now that I have hired help. More family time and me time now. It is definitely a work in progress, but I am headed in the right direction.

Q: How did you approach funding for your business?

A: With the help of my mentors, we made sales, raised funding through grants, and landed a pitch competition.

Q: How do you manage your time between working on your business and other aspects of your life?

A: As mentioned, this has been challenging since I began my business. Along with having a fantastic husband who picks up the slack whenever needed, I now have created a schedule that allows me to turn work off at a specific time to focus on myself and my family. I have hired an Operations Manager, Kirsten Holliman, to help with the workload, which gives me time to build up my business as she builds inside the business. I am grateful to Kirsten for joining the MBS team as my right-hand lady, and I know that with her help and expertise, we are going to that MBS to new heights.

Q: Any words of wisdom or inspiration you’d give someone just starting out?

A: There is never a perfect time to start just start! If you wait until everything is perfect, you will wait forever because perfection never happens. Take that leap, and build as you go. Trust me on this!
